A Jeweled Teal Commission: Collaboration, Energy, and Sparkle
Recently, I completed a custom 60″ x 60″ statement painting in a brilliant, jewel-toned teal-turquoise for a collector I first met in 2024. From our very first meeting at an art festival, she was unforgettable, radiating excitement and style from head to toe, the kind of presence that lingers long after the conversation ends.
When she returned the following year, I smiled instantly and said, “Oh, I never forgot you.” That moment of recognition opened the door to a deeper conversation, this time about her new Palm Springs home and her dream for a large-scale artwork to anchor the space. Her enthusiasm was contagious, truly contagious, and I knew immediately we were about to embark on something special.
Like most meaningful creative collaborations, the journey had its moments of challenge. Yet in hindsight, those moments only strengthened the communication, clarified the vision, and elevated the final work. Together, we envisioned a piece built through hundreds of sculpted layers, rich with texture, bold color, and jewel-like sparkles, allowing light to dance and shift across its surface throughout the day.
The chosen hue, a deeply saturated teal-turquoise, became the heart of the piece. Bridging the calm of blue with the vitality of green, this modern jewel tone offered both energy and serenity, elegance and presence. It felt perfectly attuned not only to the vision she held for her new home, but to her spirit.
She visited the studio several times as we refined the palette and intention. Those visits were filled with excitement, and thoughtful dialogue, building anticipation for a work she trusted me to bring fully to life. At the final studio visit, I felt it was important to give her space to experience the completed painting privately. After months of constructing, observing, and living with the piece myself, I opened the door, ushered her in, and gently closed it behind her.
From outside the studio, I could hear her expressive declarations, pure, unfiltered joy. I only wish I had captured that moment on camera. When I re-entered, we both knew without question: the piece was exactly what it was meant to be.
Not long after, she selected additional completed artworks to add to her collection, prompting a drive to Palm Springs to deliver the paintings in person. Walking through her front door and seeing the custom teal-turquoise piece fully installed, breathing in the natural light of her home, was deeply moving. Always an exciting moment: seeing a work truly belong, transform a space, and come alive.
It was perfection.
She calls her custom Discovery Collection piece her Angel Painting. Once installed, the name felt undeniable, its presence luminous, protective, and powerful. Her words say it best:
Thanks, honey! I feel like my angel painting has completely transformed my life. The difference in this house is amaaaaaaaaaaazing! So, so happy!!!
Before returning to Los Angeles, our conversation turned to muses. She remarked on how extraordinary it must be to be one. I smiled and reminded her,
“You already are, and you’re looking at it shining back at you.”
